Groupadd command on Linux (create group)

The groupadd command on Linux creates a user group. This command writes information to the /etc/group and /etc/gshadow files.

The most common options are:

  • -f: Forces the command to exit as a success even if the group name or groupid already exists;
  • -g N: Assigns the number N to the Group ID;
  • -p PASSWORD: assigns a password to a group, so a user must know the password to join a group

Examples:

To create a group called accounting:

# groupadd accounting
# cat /etc/group |grep accounting accounting:x:1006:
