How is the LPIC 101 test?

This test is the first required to obtain the LPI LPIC-1 certificate.

This exam is usually as smooth as Exam 102 and covers much of the introduction to the Linux system.

The 101 exam is 90 minutes long and has approximately 60 questions. Around 75% of the questions are multiple-choice questions where there is only one correct option.

Some will present a scenario where some administrative measure needs to be taken. Others ask which command is appropriate for a given task.

Another 10% of the questions are multiple-choice with more than one correct option.

There are currently four key topics for the 101 exam:

Topic 101 — System Architecture: This topic discusses determining and configuring the hardware, peripherals, boot system, and changing runlevel execution levels. It represents 14% of the test.

Topic 102 – Linux Installation and Package Manager: This topic explains how to proceed with the disk layout, the installation of the boot loader, the installation of programs from the source code, the management of shared libraries, and how to use the Debian package system, RPM and YUM. It represents 18% of the test.

Topic 103 – GNU and Unix commands: This topic covers commands used in everyday system administration, command syntax, text filters, processes, process priorities, file and directory management, redirects, regular expressions, and working with vi. Represents 43 % of the test.

Topic 104 – Devices and File Systems: The objectives of this topic include creating Linux partitions and file systems, control and maintain file system integrity, configure disk quotas, permissions, and symbolic links. It represents 25% of the test.

This exam will test your theoretical knowledge, commands, and your
common options, location of important files, settings syntax, and
most commonly used procedures.
